LAMB COUNTY FACTS

Lamb County was created in 1876 from Bexar District and named after Lt. G.A. Lamb who died in the battle of San Jacinto. Littlefield, the home of Waylon Jennings, is located 35 miles northwest of Lubbock and serves as the county seat. The population according to the most current census count is 14,760. The county has seven communities with six school districts. Besides Littlefield, other communities include Amherst, Earth, Olton, Spade, Springlake, and Sudan.

Agriculture provides approximately one-half of all earned income in the county. Land uses are for range and pasture and cultivation. Crops produced include cotton, corn, corn silage, grain sorghum, peanuts, vegetables, alfalfa and ornamentals. Presently there are six dairies operating and more under construction. There are two major cattle feed yards and numerous small cattle preconditioning yards in the county. There is also one large lamb feed yard.
